I was meeting with an old friend today here in Dallas and we decided to meet at the Union Coffee House down on Dyer Street. I have been there before and really like the atmosphere. We met at 10 am and as we were waiting to order, my friend asked me if I have ever tried Matcha green tea.
Not only had I never tried it, I had never even heard of it!
He went on to explain that matcha is a kind of green tea leaf that finishes its growing in the shade, thereby increasing the amount of nutrients and phytochemicals.
Let’s just say I was intrigued.
He went on to say that the leaves are ground into a fine powder and then are used to create an infusion with hot water so that you consume the whole leaf. There is no steeping, like with regular tea.
Now one of the reasons that I go to a coffee house is for a shot of caffeine to help pick me up and get me through a busy work day, so I asked him about the caffeine content in Matcha green tea.
He said that matcha has about half of the caffeine as a cup of coffee, but that it contains phytochemicals that temper the caffeine so that it is released slower and lasts longer than the caffeine in a cup of coffee.
Ok, so now I had to try it!
I ordered a Matcha Latte with vanilla and I really liked the flavor. I would describe it as slightly grassy, but with a green tea hint of flavor.
We finished our Matcha lattes and I headed back to work. I didn’t get the kick of caffeine that I am used to with my mid morning coffee, but I did notice that I was really focused and productive for the rest of the day. There was no afternoon crash and I still felt pretty lively when I headed home at 5pm.
I was pretty intrigued by this matcha and decided to do some research and see what I could find.
I was amazed to find a whole culture of matcha lovers on the internet and some really awesome information about the health benefits of matcha.
Apparently matcha is loaded with antioxidants, more than 10 times the antioxidants of regular green tea!
Anyway, I am now a matcha convert and have replaced my mid morning coffee with a matcha latte!
Of course, this is Visual art Dallas, so I searched for a good matcha infographic and I found a good one!
Here it is…
